I really enjoy admiring art, and am quite a regular exhibition-goer. Here in Perth we are fortunate to have access to some great works – by both local (Western) Australian and international artists. I will be blogging about various exhibitions and galleries on this site, and today I am kicking things off with the stunning Above and Beyond show by Jules Sher that I had the pleasure of seeing yesterday at Linton and Kay Galleries in Subiaco.

Jules Sher originally hails from South Africa, and studied painting at the Central School of Art in London before moving to Australia in 1967. His style is one of abstracted landscapes, and his 2023 Above and Beyond exhibition exemplifies this perfectly. The majority of the oil-on-canvas pieces in this exhibition bear the title of ‘Coastline’ or ‘Horizon’, and, in Sher’s own words, this horizon line enables him to ‘approach the images from two perspectives – an overview from above and the illusion of distance beyond.’
I could definitely see a lot of the Western Australian landscape in his work – the deep blues and turquoises of the Indian Ocean, the golds and rusts of the sands and fields, and the purples and pinks of coastal sunsets. A harmonious balance between realism and abstraction. You can also see my Instagram reel of the exhibition here.

But while Jules Sher’s works were in the spotlight in the main showroom, the second room at the gallery is a treasure trove of its own, featuring pieces from past exhibitions by equally talented artists. On display on this occasion were some stunning Indigenous artworks by the likes of Melissa Sandy and Maudie Jerrold, which had been part of the Yinja Barni exhibition earlier in February, as well as gorgeous porcelain vases by Ted Secombe and intricate 3D works by the brilliant Leon Pericles. If you ever visit Linton & Kay’s Subiaco gallery, be sure to check out this smaller back room too – it’s definitely worth it!

Jules Sher’s Above and Beyond exhibition runs from Saturday 11 February to Sunday 26 February 2023 at Linton & Kay Galleries, Subiaco. The gallery is open Monday to Sunday 10 am to 4 pm.
