Autumn in Perth: 5 stunning spots to enjoy this season

Last Updated on April 6, 2025 by Home in the World

Albert Camus once said that ‘autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower’, and he wasn’t wrong. Sure, summer may be over – but, as the trees put on their annual show of vivid yellows, ambers, browns and reds, their ever diminishing foliage set aglow by the soft touch of autumnal sunlight, what’s not to love? Autumn in Perth is simply glorious!

These fervent few months in the lead-up to winter are a great time to take a leaf out of the trees’ book (pun intended) and shed any problems or issues you may have, preparing instead for a new season. I personally believe it is also the most pleasant season in Perth; the intense heat has passed, the weather is more stable, and there’s a fresher, crisper feel all round. Here are three of my favourite spots to make the most of this stunning time of year in and around the city.

Autumn in Perth at Hyde Park

Hyde Park, Highgate

Barely a 5-minute drive from the city centre, in the suburb of Highgate, is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful parks in all of Perth. With its London-plane-tree-lined lake, expansive lawns, winding walking trails and native flower gardens, it’s gorgeous any time of year.

But it is probably at its most picturesque, most whimsical and most Instagrammable in April and May, when the weeping plane trees drip-feed their seasonal offering of spent leaves into the green waters of Lake Boodjamooling and the lawns and paths provide an extra crunch underfoot. With ample street parking and easy access to public transport, it’s a wonderful place to picnic, go for a walk or sit on one of the waterside benches and watch the world go by.

Claisebrook, East Perth

Similarly within a 5-minute drive of Perth’s city centre, the Claisebrook precinct of East Perth is another great spot to take in the changing hues of the London plane trees, albeit in a more residential setting. Follow the original brook itself past Regency-style buildings, waterside cafés and Claisebrook Lake, before emerging out onto the area’s undisputed showpiece, Claisebrook Cove.

And don’t forget to venture off into a few side streets while you’re at it. The plane trees are omnipresent around here, interspersed with some starry-leaved maples that turn a vivid shade of red in late May. Wherever you go in this patch of Perth, you’ll definitely be able to soak up some autumnal vibes.

Kintail Road, Applecross

For some autumn goodness south of the river, Kintail Road is a fabulous option. The entire length of this main artery running through the heart of Applecross transforms into a veritable canopy of oranges, browns and golds from late April onwards.

It makes for a magical drive, especially on a clear day when the sunlight filters through the leaves. And the later in May you go, the more of those leaves you will find on the ground. So, if you have time, make a brief stop and crunch your way through them. It’s very satisfying! Then consider capping it all off by enjoying a warming coffee or brunch in the autumn sunshine at one of the cute cafés on nearby Ardross Street. A wholesome experience for sure.

Raeburn Orchards, Roleystone

Located in Roleystone, in the picturesque Perth Hills, this one is a little further out than the previous two options. But by further out, we’re only talking a 40-minute drive, so it’s easily manageable as a half-day trip and boy, is that trip worth it. You’re transported far from the hustle and bustle, finding yourself instead in the tranquil, rural surrounds of a gorgeous, family-owned orchard that has been in operation since 1948.

May is persimmon season, and arguably the most vibrant time to visit. The $5 entry fee for adults (free for kids under 12) allows you to wander the flaming red avenues of persimmon trees and also explore their other fruit trees, taking in the beautiful undulating scenery as you go. Please note that fruit-picking is not allowed. But you can buy their fresh produce and other handmade crafts in the cute shop area on your way in or out. Definitely one of the more wholesome autumn experiences Perth has to offer!

Stirk Park, Kalamunda

Another gem in the Perth Hills is Stirk Park in Kalamunda. Just a 30-minute drive from Perth, this gorgeous park, located right in the heart of Kalamunda, transforms into a riot of crimsons, oranges and yellows from late April/early May.

It’s so dreamy to wander its pathways under its fiery canopies, especially when these are backlit by the soft autumnal sunshine. Truly magical! Consider having a picnic in the park or lunching at one of the many cute eateries in the town centre. And if you’re there on the first Saturday of the month (e.g. in May or June), you can also check out the nearby Kalamunda Artisan Markets.

Enjoy autumn in Perth!
