If you think the title of this post is simply me expressing my enthusiasm for these delicious doughnuts, you would be partly right, but it is also the fitting name of the cute local business OMG! Decadent Donuts I encountered recently at the Perth City Farm Winter Feast Market. These seasonal markets see stallholders from across Perth come together in the lush courtyard of the urban community farm in East Perth to sell fresh fruit and vegetables, tasty treats, handicrafts and other eco-friendly products – to the backdrop of live music.
The striking blue OMG! Decadent Donuts truck immediately caught my eye. Then I saw it was selling doughnuts, all of which were vegan, gluten-free, wheat-free, egg-free, dairy-free, nut-free, sulphite-free, yeast-free and contained no artificial colours or flavours. And then I caught a whiff of their yummy aroma. I was sold. The only dilemma now was to decide which ones to get; no mean feat when you are faced with tempting names like Cacao Delish, Luscious Lemon, Spicy Ranga and Berry Sinful. In the end, I went for OMG Cinnamon (your original, classic cinnamon-dusted doughnut), Coffee Coffee Yum Yum (the flavour of the month) and Choc Mint Bliss (because why not).
They were still nice and warm by the time I got home, so I tucked straight in. The company name refers to the exclamation people would make whenever they bit into one of these handcrafted-sugar-dusted doughnuts. And I certainly became one of those people, because, oh em gee, these guys were delectable – super tasty, light and not at all greasy or stodgy.
It is full credit to the OMG! crew that they are able to achieve such an amazing result without all the allergens, and their professed mission is indeed to create a ‘genuinely inclusive product … that is 100% natural and that everyone can enjoy.’ In fact, their doughnuts are so good that, at the recent national baking industry awards, they won a silver medal for their cinnamon doughnuts – and, as the judges were blind, they were not even aware there was no dairy, gluten etc. involved!
Ivan, the owner, does a great job running the Perth Central branch (which covers the region between the river and Beach Road in the north). There is no brick-and-mortar store, but the little blue truck is a regular attendee of local markets and festivals, plus event catering is also offered. There are OMG! locations right across the country, and the other Western Australian branches are Bunbury, Geraldton, Perth Hills, Perth North, Perth South and Perth South West.
So whether you’re a vegan, coeliac or have other dietary requirements or preferences, the odds are you will be able to enjoy these decadent delights, and I promise you won’t be disappointed!
