There are some Instagram accounts that immediately scream EYE CANDY as soon as you visit them. You know the ones I’m talking about; where each individual image is thoughtfully composed, focusing on unique details or scenes displaying just enough eccentricity to create an eclectic yet consistent feed aesthetic that makes you want to keep scrolling for more.
Well that’s precisely the vibe of the Accidentally Wes Anderson (a.k.a. AWA) account, which is inspired by the distinctly whimsical style, colour palettes and symmetry used by iconic film director Wes Anderson. Now boasting a cult following of nearly 2 million (as at 2023), it was started by Brooklyn couple Wally and Amanda in 2017 as their own personal travel bucket list.

Six years on and the feed has evolved into a global community of travellers, architects, history buffs, photographers and other creatives, all of whom are able to submit their own Anderson-esque photographs or stories for consideration, the best getting featured on the Instagram account and/or AWA website.
The latter is an ever-expanding travel resource, jam-packed with guides to some of the most singular and visually appealing places on earth. Search by destination, architectural category or even colour palette, and prepare for your eyeballs to be tantalised by the varied assortment of quirky façades, delicious symmetry, soothing minimalism, luscious interiors, zany modes of transport and other off-the-wall attractions.

This sublime collection of work has now also been distilled into a fabulous book collated by Wally and Amanda, with a foreword by Wes Anderson himself. After fangirling their Instagram for a while, I decided to buy a copy of the New York Times bestseller. I had high hopes for it based on my digital AWA experiences, and the hard copy did not disappoint. It is a super classy publication by Orion Books, structured by geographic region.
With stunning visuals and fascinating stories of over two hundred extraordinary locations around the globe – from a pancake stand in Croatia to a train station in Vietnam and even a port in Antarctica –, this is the ultimate coffee-table book for anyone who appreciates (armchair) travel, architecture, history, sophisticated photographic composition, lush colour palettes and general quirk.

Vogue probably put it best when they wrote that AWA was ‘the Instagram trend you didn’t know you needed…Art may imitate life, but as evidenced by the thousands of people designating their photos #AccidentallyWesAnderson, perhaps the opposite is also true.’ The Accidentally Wes Anderson book is simply a must-have for globetrotters and general aesthetes.
Its unique content and fittingly striking cover not only make it a talking point and centrepiece for your home, but also a fantastic gift. I’m delighted to have it and, as a fellow travel & lifestyle reader here on this blog, I’m certain you will too.
