Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei: My review

Last Updated on February 7, 2026 by Home in the World

When looking online for a hotel to stay at in Taipei, the Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei immediately caught my eye. I was struck by the fact that it had thousands of reviews online, with the overwhelming majority giving it a very high rating. Pretty impressive indeed.

I had only stayed at one other Shangri-La property in the past (in Kuala Lumpur, many years ago), but it had been an excellent experience and, having managed to find a decent online deal for their Plaza Suite, I was sold.

The Shangri-La brand has been synonymous with luxury hospitality for over 50 years, and the Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei itself has been in operation for over 30 years. That’s a long time to be at the top of your game, and yet the property absolutely delivered on every level, more than living up to the lofty standards of its parent brand.

Read on to find out all about my stay and why I recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to enjoy affordable luxury when visiting Taipei. You might also like to download my free quick guide to Taipei, which concisely summarise everything you need to know before you go.

Arrival & first impressions

As is most often the case, my first impressions came in the form of email correspondence with the reservations and guest services departments. Everyone I dealt with there was extremely efficient and professional. They were even able to cater to our request of an air purifier in the room.

But where they really shone was when I had to send them rushed, last-minute emails from Perth airport when our flight to Hong Kong, and therefore also our onward flight to Taipei, was cancelled, meaning we wouldn’t be able to make our first night of accommodation.

At that point, I didn’t even know when we would be arriving, but the team at the Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei replied to all my emails immediately, despite it being after midnight, and didn’t even charge me for the lost night. They went above and beyond to handle things smoothly and I was both extremely impressed and super grateful for that.

When we did finally arrive at the property, having been picked up at the airport using the hotel’s private transfer service, our bags were swiftly taken by the wonderful concierge, and check-in was completed competently by the friendly reception staff.

There was also an option to check in up at the Horizon Club, since we had booked a suite, but it was just as easy to do it in the main lobby.

The property itself is very impressive and grand when you first walk in, with a circular shaped lobby that included a classy piano lounge and gorgeous cake shop.

It has the feel of a well established luxury Asian hotel – contemporary without being ultra modern – with Far Eastern décor elements, fragrant air, mood lighting and shiny marble surfaces.

The room

As we were travelling as a family, we opted for a Plaza Suite, which was absolutely massive and actually very decent value for money. As you step through the front door, you find yourself in a small foyer that opens out into a sweeping living room with room to swing many a cat! The décor and colour scheme are one of deep earthy tones and wood, with a distinctly burgundy feel – definitely very Shangri-La.

There’s a comfy living area with 2 armchairs, a sofa, coffee table and TV, plus ample space for a rollaway bed (which we had). Also of note is the guest washlet near the front door. It’s definitely very handy to have this separate toilet and basin – regardless of whether you have guests or it’s simply a case of more than one person needing to use the loo at the same time!

Flowing seamlessly on from this is a separate dining area with a huge glass table and a small selection of office supplies – perfect for small business meetings or family dinners alike. A bank of large windows lines the entire length of the living area and dining area, so they’re always light and bright.

The Plaza Suites have either a city view or Taipei 101 view. We were fortunate to get a Taipei 101 view, and, considering we were on the 35th floor, we also had panoramic views of the city’s rooftops and surrounding hills.

This living and dining area is separated from the bedroom, not just by a wall, but by an entire corridor lined with mirrored wardrobes. Needless to say, there is LOTS of storage space!

This corridor has solid wooden doors at either end, so the bedroom can be doubly sealed off from the living room. And this bedroom, like the other parts of the suite, has a huge window overlooking the city’s rooftops (and Taipei 101).

Our suite had a king bed, which was extremely comfortable, though it would have been good to have outlets on either side of the bed and a slightly large bedside drawer. Only one side had power outlets, which was a bit inconvenient.

The marble ensuite was, like everything else in the Plaza Suite: massive. A semi-separate toilet cubicle, huge rain-shower cubicle, enormous spa bath and large vanity with twin basins made for a very comfortable bathing experience, not to mention the lush L’Occitane amenities that are a standard at Shangri-La properties.

Other facilities

The Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei is an enormous property, with over 400 rooms and suites, six restaurants, three bars & lounges, a rooftop pool and a wellness centre.

While I did not personally get to try many of these during my short stay, I did take a good wander around a lot of the hotel and its public areas, all of which featured stunning décor and the sleek feel you would expect from a 5-star property. From fine Chinese dining to sky-high cocktail bars, the Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei certainly does have you covered. Below are a few pictures.

One of the dining options I did try was The Cake Room, whose award-winning team of pastry chefs produces some truly exquisite creations. I was there during Halloween, and there were plenty of cute and quirky themed cakes and treats in the display cabinet.

But I was there to try some of Taiwan’s famous pineapple-based desserts, and I ended up buying the pineapple bread, which was absolutely delicious and extremely reasonably priced.

We also sampled the room service for both breakfast and dinner, which was always served with a smile by the wonderful staff. Breakfast came beautifully presented with fresh fruit, cereal, fruit juice, toast, coffee, milk (including a dairy-free option) and a variety of jams and butter.

For dinner we tried the Hainanese chicken rice, which came with a yummy clear soup, greens and four flavoursome condiments. I also tried the Taiwanese fried rice noodles, which similarly came with soup, greens and condiments, and were not only delicious but also pretty reasonably priced at the equivalent of around USD 11.00.

After a long day out in the heat sightseeing, sometimes it’s just nice to sit in your room in your PJs and indulge in room service!

Location

The Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei is located on a wide, leafy avenue in the central-eastern part of Taipei. It is just a 10-minute walk from the Linjiang Night Market (a.k.a Tonghua Night Market), which I highly recommend visiting as a lower-key, less-crowded but just-as-vibrant night market in the city.

There is also a large shopping mall directly adjacent to the hotel, as well as several restaurants and convenience stores in the immediate vicinity.

Being in central Taipei, it will take you around 45 minutes to 1 hour to get to and from Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport by car, depending on traffic. I would definitely allow at least an hour. The hotel can arrange airport pick-ups and drop-offs, and we certainly made use of this service.

In terms of public transport, the closest subway stations are about a 10-minute walk away (Xinyi Anhe station on the red line (Tamsui-Xinyi line) and Liuzhangli station on the brown line (Wenhu line). We ended up taking taxis to and from the hotel, as the main attractions such as the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial and Taipei 101 were both only short drives away.

We did, however, try the Taipei subway (you can read about this in my Taipei post) elsewhere in the city and found it to be extremely user-friendly and efficient. So just be aware that you will not have a subway station right on your doorstep, but it is not excessively far away and taxis are equally readily available.

Why choose the Shangri-la Far Eastern Taipei

Our 3-night stay at the Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei was pretty much flawless. I was already thoroughly impressed by the attentiveness and efficiency of the staff in their prompt and generous handling of our delayed arrival, and this impeccable service was something they continued to deliver on until the very last moment of our transfer back to the airport.

I was definitely left with an excellent impression of the Shangri-La brand, considering it had been so long since I had stayed at one of their properties.

Among the things I particularly valued, and why I recommend this hotel: Competent, professional staff who spoke and wrote very good English; spotlessly clean and plush 5-star comfort without being excessively expensive (especially when compared with other properties of the same standard in many other cities around the world); a pleasant leafy location within easy access of all major sights; and ample dining options and well-priced room service.

Taipei is an underrated Asian destination that’s well worth a visit, and if you want to indulge a bit and enjoy well-versed hospitality from a long-standing, world-class brand, I genuinely don’t think you can go wrong with the Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei. It’s certainly encouraged me to try more Shangri-La properties around the world, and particularly in Asia.
