After a 6-hour drive from its sister property in Siem Reap (which I found to be an excellent base for exploring Angkor Wat), I was really excited to experience the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh.
I knew it was going to be a very different style – the Siem Reap property being a low-rise resort in a smaller town and its Phnom Penh counterpart being a modern high-rise in a capital city –, but I was also pretty confident of being able to count on the same high standards of service and quality that generally distinguish Marriott-brand properties.
Read on to find out all about my stay and why I recommend the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh as an excellent option if you’re travelling to the Cambodian capital, whether for business or leisure. Arrival & first impressions
Having booked the Courtyard in Siem Reap and realising it had a highly rated sister property in the Cambodian capital, which I planned to visit after Siem Reap, the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh was my obvious first port of call. As usual, my initial dealings came in the form of email correspondence with various managers and reservations agents, all of whom were exceedingly friendly and efficient in answering all my questions and catering to my family’s needs.

As someone who has run a business for nearly 20 years, I place a lot of emphasis on prompt responses and ensuring clients feel well attended to, so I do tend to judge other businesses and companies through that lens.
There have been properties I have contacted in the past who, despite reading my emails, never bother to get back to me, even when I follow up. While this is not always a perfect indication of how a business operates, I do believe it is quite telling.
So when I receive efficient replies, including from very high level managers who have a lot of other things on their plate, I appreciate it a lot and it creates a very good first impression for me. This was definitely the case at the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh.
It was early evening by the time we arrived from our overland transfer from Siem Reap, and our check-in was handled swiftly and professionally by the reception staff. One of the first things I noticed as I stepped into the compact but stylish lobby was the fresh, subtly floral fragrance.
With its floor-to ceiling windows (partially overlooking the greenery of the outdoor terrace), a refreshment station, classy lobby lounge and unique artworks providing pops of colour against the darker KAZE-designed, Nordic-inspired wooden decor elements, it really does feel like you’re entering a sanctuary of sorts as you set foot inside.

As with the Siem Reap property, the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh is well above the standards of Courtyard hotels you will find in the US. This is a sleek, modern property that – I was told by one of the staff – is the most highly recommended business hotel in all of Phnom Penh, and is many companies’ preferred place to stay in Cambodia’s capital. In the Cambodia Property Awards, it indeed received a Highly Commended mention for Best Hotel Interior Design.
Rooms
We had an Executive King Corner Room interconnecting with an Executive Twin Room on the 16th floor, and the interconnection was in the form of twin-key access, rather than just a door in the wall between the rooms. So there was one main ‘front door’ which opened onto a small space from which the two rooms branched off with their own individual doors, meaning you could keep both the room doors open and just shut the main front door, which both room keys were incidentally able to unlock.

Both rooms were extremely spacious and immaculately clean, with the same sleek, modern feel as the lobby – warm wood elements and floors combined with soft grey and blue fabrics. The Corner Room, true to its name, had two intersecting sides of entirely floor-to-ceiling windows, providing 180° views over the colourful rooftops and glittering skyscrapers of Phnom Penh.

Each room featured super comfy sofas (the Corner Room’s also had a chaise longue-style extension), ultra plush bedding, an adequately sized writing desk and chair, flat-screen TV, a bar fridge and complimentary daily bottled water (in glass bottles).
As with its sister property in Siem Reap, the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh also has ample power/USB outlets throughout, which is something I really appreciate in a hotel room – and is not always a given, even in four or five-star hotels!
In general, I would say both the Executive King Corner Room and the Executive Twin Room are perfect for both leisure and business travellers. Oh, and the housekeeping is absolutely top notch too.

Bathrooms
Of equal importance to the rooms themselves are the bathrooms. And the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh delivers here too.
The bathroom of the Corner Room was suitably larger than that of the normal Executive Room, but both were sleek and modern with charcoal colour scheme and Nirvae Botanicals amenities (a toiletries brand committed to sustainability and cruelty-free products, using natural ingredients).
This brand was also used for the shampoo, conditioner and body wash mounted in refillable bottles on the wall of the shower cubicle – one of the steps the hotel is taking to improve eco-friendliness.
Another such step I noticed was a dual compartment bin in the bathroom, separating recyclable and non-recyclable waste.

The shower cubicle in the Executive Room had a glass pane overlooking the rest of the room – but don’t freak out, because this can be pulled down manually via a cord to provide full privacy. In the Corner Room, this did not apply, as the layout here was such that the bathroom was an entirely separate, elongated space whose only shared wall with the bedroom was the wall behind the bed. So no risk of any glass panes here!

The only glass came in the form of a window at the far end of the bathroom where the bath tub was, which provided lots of nice natural light (but once again there was a manual privacy blind that could be pulled down if you wished).
The shower cubicle was huge and luxurious, with overhead rain shower, as well as a separate handheld shower head for those who prefer that. I definitely enjoyed stepping out into the fluffy white towels, applying some of the fragrant sandalwood body lotion and slipping into the comfy bed at the end of the day!
Dining
As a 4-star hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh has a couple of different options to choose from when it comes to dining. The one most guests will experience is The Mekong restaurant on the 1st floor. It’s a vast corner space with floor-to-ceiling windows providing 180° views of the local streets, not to mention a ‘floating’ private meeting room accessed via a small staircase.
The all-day Mekong restaurant is where the daily buffet breakfast is served, and it also supplies the room-service menu. We tried it for breakfast and dinner and loved the mix of Asian and Western options.

For those who prefer in-room breakfast, they leave a pre-order menu in the room each day, which you can fill out and hang on your door handle before midnight. We did this on numerous occasions and everything was always done to perfection.
The Western breakfast offering has everything you would expect: a variety of cereals, milks (including non-dairy), pastries, hot items (hash browns, grilled tomatoes, eggs to order etc.), fresh fruit, yoghurts, coffee, tea, juice, the list goes on.
The lunch/dinner offering is extremely varied, whether you have it in the restaurant or as room service. We tried both the Cambodian (lok lak, char kdaw muan etc.) and Western (pizza, Mekong burger, pasta) options, and they were always delicious and beautifully presented.

Another must-visit at the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh is its gorgeous rooftop bars and restaurant – whether it be the Poolbar serving cocktails and snacks by the outdoor pool or, one floor up, The Deck restaurant, which has its own drinks & snacks menu, but where you can order food from The Mekong restaurant as well.
Either way, I highly recommend heading up there and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere, great music, panoramic views, fabulous food & drink and outstanding service. Sunset and after dark are best, but really any time of day is great.

I even celebrated a milestone birthday up there, and the super kind staff set up our table beautifully, gave me a cake and sang for me. A special moment I will never forget. It was yet another example of the incredible hospitality and service we had received since the moment we had arrived.
I can confidently say the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh (along with its sister property, the Courtyard Siem Reap) has some of the best, friendliest staff I have ever met, anywhere. Did I mention the room-service staff even brought me a big cake for breakfast on my birthday too? There was so much thought and care put into every little touch.

The Lounge, a small, sleek lobby bar is another of the property’s dining offerings, perfect for snacks, pre-dinner drinks, networking events or for sampling one of the exquisite cakes displayed in their cabinet. I suspect the aforementioned breakfast delivery came from there. And if so, I can vouch for the fact that it was absolutely scrumptious.

If you have booked a room with Club access, you will also have the option of evening snacks in the club lounge on level 20. We sampled some of these too. The room is not massive, but big enough and provides stunning views of the city. The snacks are beautifully presented in a cute kitchen-like space. As with everywhere else throughout the property, everything was spotlessly clean with wonderful service.

Other facilities
In addition to the stunning rooftop pool on level 20 (open 7am-7pm), the main other facility worth mentioning is the 24-hour gym on level 20. I did not use this myself but it looked to be well equipped with numerous treadmills, weights and strength-building equipment, plus a killer view of the city.

Location
The Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh is well located in a bustling neighbourhood just a stone’s throw away from many small shops, galleries and eateries, and a short tuk tuk or Grab ride from major sights, such as Royal Palace, National Museum of Cambodia, Riverside, Central Market and Genocide Museum.
I wouldn’t say Phnom Penh is the most walkable of cities, but there are certainly areas in the vicinity of the hotel that you can easily stroll around, such as the hip Street 240. Hotel security was also top-notch, with a good (but not overbearing) presence at the entrance.

Why choose the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh
As you can hopefully tell by now, the offerings at the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh are excellent. I’ve already mentioned that this is not your average Courtyard by US standards. The entire property is squeaky clean (I noticed they even wash the pavements outside the hotel), with plush accommodation, a great variety of dining, more-than-adequate fitness facilities, top-notch security and outstanding hospitality staff.
From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we felt so well taken care of. We got to know many of the staff members, and the level of attention to detail and personalised touches was incredible. Kudos to the management for running such an immaculate property in every sense of the word.
I can totally see why the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh has been awarded TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence and is a highly regarded option among the many business travellers who visit Cambodia’s capital. But it is equally well equipped for leisure travellers like us.

If you’re looking for a well located, comfortable, modern hotel offering fantastic value for money and overdelivering on what you’d expect from a 4-star property, I can’t recommend the Courtyard by Marriott Phnom Penh enough. We had 6 wonderful nights there and it felt like home. You definitely can’t go wrong here; it’s a perfect base for exploring the many treasures of the underrated city that is Phnom Penh.
I also stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Siem Reap Resort prior to this, and you can read my full review of it here. And if you’re looking for another Marriott property in Phnom Penh, I have similarly reviewed the Fairfield by Marriott Phnom Penh. I rate both of these properties as equally recommended options when visiting Cambodia.

Great accommodation recommendation for PP. Cambodia is on the threshold of a boom, a well-deserved one too. Your info here will be invaluable for those planning a visit
It sure is a great destination. And Phnom Penh is an underrated Asian city. Thanks for reading!
Wow, this looks a lot fancier than the Courtyards I know from Europe and the US! I am saving this, would love to visit Cambodia again!
Exactly! If you’re only familiar with Courtyards in the US or Europe, you’ll be very pleasantly surprised with their standard in Asia. They are sooo much nicer there. I highly recommend both this one in Phnom Penh and the one in Siem Reap. Excellent value for money and top-notch service. Hope you can get back to Cambodia soon!
