Got a layover in Singapore and wondering about fun things to see at Changi Airport while you pass the time? Look no further.
Changi is routinely voted the world’s best airport, and it’s not hard to see why. Not only is it an efficient, highly functional, spotlessly clean facility, but it has also gone to great effort to find ways of ensuring a fun and interactive experience for transit passengers.
Vibrant art, lush nature, jaw-dropping water features and even an outdoor rooftop garden (what a rarity to be able to enjoy some outdoor air when stuck in transit!) are all on offer.
Everything listed in this article is located airside, meaning you can only access it after passing through security. And if you are a transit passenger, it means you do not need to clear immigration, obtain any necessary visas or fill out the Singapore Arrival Card in order to see them.
I have had transits at Changi lasting as long as 19 hours and I did not feel the need to step outside the airport because there were so many options in the transit area alone!
So if you want to inject a bit of art and aesthetic into your layover in Singapore, read on to find out my picks for things to see at Changi airport.
The Jewel
So when I said earlier that everything in this list was located airside only, the one semi-exception to this is The Jewel.
Most people are familiar with The Jewel from seeing photos online of a giant indoor waterfall cascading from the ceiling and surrounded by lush greenery. And that is indeed part of The Jewel. But The Jewel is more than that; it’s actually an entire multi-level shopping mall and entertainment precinct filled with stores, restaurants and immersive attractions.
If you want to visit this mall, you will need to clear immigration and enter the country of Singapore, which will also require you to fill out an Arrival Card.
If, however, you just want to catch a glimpse of the Jewel Rain Vortex that is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, you can do so by taking the Skytrain between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. This will give you a decent view of it, as the train passes through The Jewel building. And it all happens airside, meaning you do not need to clear immigration.
Please note that the waterfall only operates from 10am to 10pm, so if your layover is overnight, as one of mine was, you will unfortunately not be able to see it in action.

Dreamscape
Now this is definitely one of the cool things to see at Changi Airport. It was certainly one of my favourites!
Dreamscape is an immersive fantasy garden where digital marinelife swim above your head and you’re immersed in a world of lush, refreshing flora and the sounds of nature.

While real fish swim in ponds and vegetation-clad pillars rise up around you, enjoy the soothing aquatic visuals that are routinely projected overhead. Sometimes it will just be rippling water, other times you’ll notice seals and schools of fish darting around – to the backdrop of mystical music.
Unlike The Jewel, Dreamscape is open 24/7, so, even if you happen to be at Changi overnight (as I was), you’ll still be able to enjoy a pretty futuristic, water-themed installation – without the crowds.
Dreamscape is located on Level 2 in the Terminal 2 transit area. Open 24 hours.
Sunflower Garden
Now I don’t know about you, but one of the things I dislike about travel, particularly long-haul, is the amount of time you have to spend indoors, among bright lights and without the ability to get any fresh air – sometimes for over 30 hours if your journey is a long one.
Which is why having something like the Sunflower Garden is so refreshing – literally and figuratively. An outdoor terrace with verandah overlooking beds of tall sunflowers, whose happy faces are enough to brighten anyone’s tedious travel day, is truly welcome relief. And yes, they are real flowers.

While the open air may not be the freshest (it’s overlooking the tarmac and aircraft bays), it is definitely still a lot better than being inside, with the added bonus of being able to watch planes take off and land!
The Sunflower Garden is located on Level 3 in the Terminal 2 transit area. Open 24 hours.
Enchanted Garden
While the open air of the Sunflower Garden is amazing, the next best thing is to be able to enjoy lush greenery inside the airport terminal.
And though there are several pockets of this throughout Changi, one of the best places to enjoy it is the aptly named Enchanted Garden.

This is a welcome injection of fresh, tropical nature in a Shangri-La-like setting, with boardwalks, bridges and vibrant glass mosaic sculptures shaped like giant bouquets and containing some of the stunning flowers Singapore is known for.
It’s a great place for kids to explore, and for taking fun photos amongst the artworks. Definitely worth adding to your list of things to see at Changi Airport.
The Enchanted Garden is located on Level 2 in the Terminal 2 transit area. Open 24 hours.

Butterfly Garden
Here’s another really unique gem in terms of things to see at Changi Airport – or any airport, for that matter!
Because I’m pretty sure very few around the world could boast having their own butterfly garden. Yes, that’s right. Singapore’s Changi Airport has a multi-level glasshouse-like enclosure with tropical plants, cascading waterfalls and a whole lot of stunning butterflies.
You’ll see them sitting on flowers, feeding on rotting fruit. These fruit are softer and more liquid, making their juices more accessible. The fermentation process also releases scents that butterflies like – though to the human nose they can be a bit pungent, so be prepared if you want to get up close to them!

There is additionally a display case where you can observe chrysalises in various stages of metamorphosis. It is absolutely incredible! Information boards explain everything, making it a simultaneously educational experience for all ages. I found it fascinating, and had to keep reminding myself I was actually in an airport!
The Butterfly Garden is located on Levels 2 & 3 in the Terminal 3 transit area. Open 24 hours.
Crystal Garden
As you pass through Terminal 3’s Central Piazza, amongst the duty-free shopping and high-end boutiques, notably the multi-level Louis Vuitton duplex store, you’ll find a collection of 12 larger-than-life illuminated dandelion sculptures, made from hand-blown Bohemian glass and featuring different textures.
This is the Crystal Garden, created in 2017. The dandelions sit amongst beds of seasonal flowers, their glowing white LEDs contrasting with the vibrant colours of the surrounding vegetation.

I enjoyed watching them twinkle whenever I walked past. The Crystal Garden is yet another great option for things to see at Changi Airport, and makes for a great place to take photos or videos. If you like gardens with a side of art & sculpture, you’ll definitely enjoy this one!
The Crystal Garden is located on Level 2 in the Terminal 3 transit area (Central Piazza). Open 24 hours.
Mother and Child sculptures
And finally, if contemporary bronze sculptures are more your thing, Changi has something for you too.
Not far from the Skytrain station in T3, you will find a collection of slender abstract sculptures depicting maternal love. These are the Mother and Child sculptures, created by Chinese artist Han Meilin in 2008.
Placed strategically in front of a glass pane providing a view of the Arrivals area, they reflect the warmth and love often associated with family members reuniting.

I have admired these sculptures on a number of transits at Changi, as I love the unique, minimalist shapes of the figures. They can be a little hard to spot, as they tend to camouflage a bit with the brown and white carpet, but definitely keep an eye out for them – as they’re another fun art experience on the list of things to see at Changi Airport.
The Mother and Child sculptures are located on Level 2 in the Terminal 3 transit area, near the Skytrain platform. Open 24 hours.
Final thoughts on fun things to see at Changi Airport
I hope this article has given you some inspiration for injecting a bit of art and fun into your Singapore layover, no matter how long you have there. They are among many fabulous things to see at Changi Airport, but definitely among my personal favourites.
And remember, they are all accessible airside, so you will not have to clear immigration or obtain any necessary Singapore entry visas to see them – which makes it even easier for you to enjoy them!
Have you seen any of them for yourself during your Singapore layovers? If so, I’d be keen to know what you thought of them!
