Hi, my name is Emily. Thanks a lot for visiting my site!
I basically decided to create it because I realised I had all these travel photos sitting around and thought it would be a nice idea to share them all from one single place. I also decided to write trip reports to go with them, as well as articles about my own hometown of Perth, Australia, and lifestyle content, mostly in the form of book reviews (it’s always good to have something to read on the plane!), but also a few baking ideas and mindfulness posts – a mix of ‘home’ and ‘the world’.
The travel content was initially just personal accounts from trips I had taken over the last decade or so, but is now increasingly including more up-to-date destination guides and shorter-form articles. Everything is written entirely by me personally – strictly no AI use.

A love of travel was instilled in me from a very young age, as both my parents had always worked in the travel & airline industry. Their jobs meant I was fortunate enough to be able to start travelling the globe from the age of 1, and basically never stopped! I think this exposure to the wider world from such a young age really cemented my keen interest in geography, maps, foreign cultures and, in particular, languages.
I started learning French at the age of 8, and at 13 also began learning German – chosen wholly and solely because I was a big fan of Michael Schumacher at the time! (I am incidentally still a very big fan of Formula 1 – see photo above, taken at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix). I continued with both languages all through high school and university.
As a teenager, the perks of my parents’ jobs meant I was able to spend many, many school holidays in France and Germany – which, for an Australian kid living on the other side of the world, is very fortunate indeed. Being able to spend so much time in those countries throughout my adolescence helped a lot with my understanding of both languages and cultures.
I was also able to visit other parts of German-speaking Europe, such as Austria and Switzerland, and gain an appreciation of different German accents. Unfortunately, apart from a very brief post from a trip to Paris in 2006, I do not have any content on France or Germany on this website, as these experiences were all well before that time. I do hope to return at some point in the future, however.
Another country not featured on the blog but where I have spent a lot of time is Spain. I began teaching myself Spanish in 2001, and in 2004 spent a semester in Valencia, on the Mediterranean coast, attending a Spanish language school and teaching English privately. Between 2003 and 2005 I travelled extensively around Spain, and a bit of Portugal too, but all my photos are stashed away somewhere on CDs gathering dust!
After graduating from uni, this love of travel and foreign cultures led me to begin a career in translation. I have been working full-time as a self-employed translator since 2006, and, when I’m not working, my other interests include photography, music, Formula 1, visiting art exhibitions, meditation, reading and learning new languages (currently Japanese and Italian).
Thank you again for stopping by. Feel free to also follow the site on any of its social-media channels – I’m still working on building up my Pinterest page, Facebook page and TikTok account, but Instagram & Threads several times a week. If you would like to use any photos from this website, please credit them with homeintheworld.net (or contact me beforehand to discuss). In the meantime, I hope you enjoy exploring, and feel right at home wherever you happen to be in the world.
