Sculpture by the Sea 2023

If the month of March is synonymous with one thing in Perth, it’s Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe Beach. Since its first edition in 2005, this time of year has seen the white sands and green slopes flanking Perth’s most iconic beach transformed into stages showcasing truly unique and eye-catching installations by local and international artists.

I have already done a previous post about the exhibition, as it is one I have attended many times over the years. But of course it just gets bigger and better each time. I took a few hours out of work on Tuesday (it is perhaps slightly less crowded on a weekday, though not much!) to make my annual pilgrimage, and I was not disappointed.

There were some really unique and photogenic pieces on display, made from materials ranging from timber, steel and concrete, to fishing nets, to plastic bottles and lids! And while it is extra special to see the artworks at golden hour, as the sun gently slips over the horizon of the Indian Ocean, don’t stress if (like me on this occasion) that doesn’t fit with your schedule – because even in the middle of the day, they are a fantastic sight to behold. The sand looks whiter, the sky bluer and the water more turquoise. Everything is vivid and full of contrast. So you can’t really go wrong either way.

Without further ado, therefore, here are a few of the many images I took during my visit. There are small collages of what I considered to be some of the most striking, and below that a more extensive slideshow. Feel free to also check out this blog’s Instagram account to see more content, including videos.

For a full list of the sculptures and their artists (as I cannot put captions in the slideshow), visit the full 2023 catalogue.

Sculpture By The Sea 2023 runs from 3 – 20 March at Cottesloe Beach, Perth
