Amazing new Perth street art: Grand Lane murals

Last Updated on February 20, 2026 by Home in the World

It seems like there’s constantly new Perth street art popping up around the city these days, and I’m certainly not sad about it!

I absolutely love any kind of public art, and indeed make an effort to seek it out no matter where I am in the world (you can find a lot of posts about it on my Instagram). But when it happens to be in my own hometown, well, that just makes things all the easier.

So much new Perth street art

The last few months have seen some amazing new additions to Perth’s street art-scene, such as this incredible piece of work by James Giddy in East Perth (completed in January 2025) and this whole cluster of jaw-dropping murals that went up in Subiaco in October 2024.

But the latest hotspot – so fresh, in fact, that one of the murals isn’t even totally finished – is the revamped Grand Lane in Perth’s CBD.

Located near the corner of Barrack Street and Wellington Street, and running in an L shape between Barrack Street and Murray Street, the laneway is no stranger to street art, its walls having frequently served as the canvas for various quirky and colourful pieces over the years.

But it’s gone through a veritable face-lift this year as part of the City of Perth’s 10-year ‘Forgotten Spaces – Revitalising Perth’s Laneways – Episode 2’ initiative (running from 2023 to 2033), with some incredible new pieces by both local and international artists.

Below is a little bit about each of the stand-out murals. Plus, feel free to check out my Instagram reel for even more visuals.

The stand-out murals

Street-scene mural by Yip Yew Chong and Leonardo Yuwono

This old-school Perth cityscape is by Singaporean artist Yip Yew Chong and Indonesian artist Leonardo Yuwono. I love how many thoughtful details have been incorporated into it! Cheeky quokkas, quaint street-corner delis and milk bars, old-fashioned trams and even a piece of real string serving as a dog leash.

It’s truly a whimsical portrayal that makes you feel like you’re walking down the high street of a bygone era, alongside locals going about their everyday errands.

Vibrant, quirky mural by Happy Decay (Murray St end)

An Aussie artist from Moruya (NSW), Happy Decay is all about creating positive experiences for everyday people, and he has absolutely nailed it with his latest piece at the Murray St end of Grand Lane.

Colourful, quirky work by Happy Decay

It’s an onslaught of colour, contrasted with sharp pops of black and white, featuring a number of quirky, some might even say trippy, creatures and some watchful eyes. Given the fact the wall is adjacent to a café, I love how a few little snack-related elements have been incorporated, such as a doughnut eye and a little cat happily drinking some kind of tea or coffee.

With its bright colours and positive calls to action (‘Play’, ‘Let’s Go’), it sure has reinvigorated what would otherwise be quite a dingy section of the alleyway.

Distinctive black-and-white piece by Hayley Welsh

If you’ve wandered the streets of Perth enough, you’ll probably have seen some of Hayley Welsh’s work before. Her enigmatic creatures with expressive, searching eyes and philosophical sayings can be found on countless walls around the Perth metropolitan area.

They’re super distinctive in their dark, monochrome style, and, in Grand Lane, they take the form of a giant fish with a trap door in its side, a magical key, and another furry little friend seemingly fishing for a home.

They provide a fabulous contrast with the other colourful murals surrounding them. I particularly loved the poignant accompanying quote, ‘The key to finding is to know what you truly seek’.

Large-scale floral mural by Jerome Davenport and Artbyrow

This jaw-dropping piece by local artists Jerome Davenport and Artbyrow is likely the first thing that will catch your eye if you’re entering Grand Lane from the Barrack St end. Only a narrow section of it is initially visible, but it gradually reveals itself in all its vibrant glory as you head further down the lane.

At the time of writing this article and taking my photos (June 2025), it was not yet totally finished (I had to try and take my photos around a cherry picker!). But enough of it was complete to be able to see how utterly epic it is. Spanning multi levels of wall space, it dwarfs you with its gigantic, vivid flower garden, complete with butterflies and bees. You feel like an ant in a magical, oversize garden.

And this is further emphasised when you look up to the tallest part of the mural, which depicts a giant looking down at the flowers through a magnifying glass. Everything sure is magnified in this piece of work! It’s absolutely stunning, and I can’t wait to see what it looks like once it’s done.
