Travel memories: 2 days in Budapest

September 29, 2019

I had been wanting to visit the picturesque Hungarian capital, Budapest, for quite some time. Originally two separate cities bisected by the Danube River – Buda on the western side and Pest on the eastern -, it has been unified since 1873, and is today home to nearly 2 million people. Many tourists tend to … More Travel memories: 2 days in Budapest

Travel memories: York day trip from Perth

September 15, 2019

You’ve no doubt heard of New York, and you’ve probably also heard of York in England. But have you heard of York, the oldest inland town in Western Australia? Situated 97 km (65 miles) east of Perth, in what is known as the Wheatbelt region, York has a population just shy of 2,500, and is … More Travel memories: York day trip from Perth

Travel memories: 4 days in Rome

August 25, 2019

This is an older, narrative-style post on how I spent 4 days in Rome. I hope it can still be of use in helping you get an idea of how you can build your own itinerary when visiting the Eternal City. Arrival and general impressions of Rome It’s fair to say my 4 days in … More Travel memories: 4 days in Rome

Travel memories: Melbourne

July 28, 2019

I feel I should preface this post by saying that it is going to be far from a detailed destination guide to Melbourne, as I have always gone there for a specific purpose. As a big tennis fan, my main motivation was the Australian Open, which I attended every January from 2002 to 2015 (except … More Travel memories: Melbourne

Travel memories: Beijing

June 30, 2019

At one point I thought I may not even make it to Beijing, given the debacle we had flying in there. What was supposed to be a 2-hour flight from Shanghai saw us on the plane for 7 hours – 5 of which were spent sitting on the tarmac at Shanghai airport with no idea … More Travel memories: Beijing

Travel memories: What to see in Shanghai

June 16, 2019

China is one of those countries you hear so much about on the news, especially here in Australia. It is a global economic powerhouse, a heavyweight in manufacturing and trade with countries all over the world. And I must admit I had been intrigued by it for quite some time. So when an opportunity came … More Travel memories: What to see in Shanghai

Travel memories: What to see in Sydney

June 8, 2019

‘And the winner is… Sydney!’ For those unaware, these were the words uttered by the president of the International Olympic Committee, the late Juan Antonio Samaranch, in 1993 as he announced which city would be hosting the 2000 Olympics. They became extremely iconic words for all Australians, and, for the rest of the 1990s, excitement … More Travel memories: What to see in Sydney

Travel memories: Los Angeles

June 2, 2019

There are a couple of reasons why Los Angeles feels a bit like a second home to me. On the one hand, the sunny climate and beach lifestyle is not all that dissimilar to the way of life in my hometown of Perth, Western Australia. I indeed often comment on the ‘Californian’ nature of some … More Travel memories: Los Angeles

Travel memories: What to see in Chicago

April 21, 2019

I have noticed that many non-Americans who visit the USA as tourists tend to stick with the two coasts. They will generally have visited Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas in the west, and New York and Florida in the east. Perhaps even somewhere like New Orleans in the south. But ask them if … More Travel memories: What to see in Chicago

Travel memories: Australia’s south-west

April 14, 2019

Despite having been born and raised in Perth, I am embarrassed to say I had never been to this popular south-west region prior to this trip (it’s a 3-hour drive each way). So my friends and I decided to put this right and go for the day. Many people of course spend several days down … More Travel memories: Australia’s south-west

📍 Perth, Australia

October is a fabulous time of year to travel! The October is a fabulous time of year to travel!

There are so many options around the world that make for perfect destinations right now.

The Northern Hemisphere is slowly making its way through autumn, while the Southern Hemisphere is slowly making its way through spring. And rainy seasons are either subsiding or are not yet fully underway (in most cases).

In other words, it’s shoulder season; not peak tourist/holiday time, but still pleasant enough to not be the depths of low season.

And that’s why it’s one of my favourite months to travel (along with May). Ironically, I am not travelling this October, but here is a little carousel of photos I’ve taken around the world over the years during the month of October.

In each case, I found it to be a great time to visit, with mild, dry weather and no particularly massive crowds. Plus, I’ve also included my hometown of Perth in there, because it is generally quite a nice time of year here too, though the spring weather can still be a bit fickle (just like it is today as I write this!)

My October picks:
📍 Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷
📍 Cairo, Egypt 🇪🇬
📍 Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦
📍 Cusco, Peru 🇵🇪
📍 London, UK 🇬🇧
📍 Margaret River, Australia 🇦🇺
📍 Osaka, Japan 🇯🇵
📍 Perth, Australia 🇦🇺
📍 Rome, Italy 🇮🇹
📍 Shanghai, China 🇨🇳
📍 Taipei, Taiwan 🇹🇼
📍 Tokyo, Japan 🇯🇵

What are your thoughts?

This is such a lovely time of year to visit the Pe This is such a lovely time of year to visit the Perth hills! The spring blossoms are out, the sun is shining (most of the time) and there’s a general sense of freshness in the air.

Have a wander around the rustic gardens of @nakedapplecider and enjoy a little snack in one of the many lush corners, and browse the eclectic bookshelves of nearby @thecozicornerbookcafe (over a cuppa, if you fancy).

A wholesome day out, only about a 45-minute drive from central Perth!

They are all located either right on or just a block off the stretch of Scarborough Beach Road between Oxford Street and Matlock Street.

It was a good reminder of how much street art we actually have around Perth if you take the time to explore a little!

Patterns of Florence 🇮🇹❤️ Architecture in Italy i Patterns of Florence 🇮🇹❤️

Architecture in Italy is pretty exquisite in general, but Florence is one of those cities that take it to the next level.

There’s so much to soak in! But I was particularly struck by the many gorgeous patterns, geometric shapes and coloured marble stripes. Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance... they’re all on full display here.

Imagine if we were still building structures with iconic styles like this today!

📍 Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore
📍 Basilica di Santa Maria Novella
📍 Palazzo Vecchio

Did you know Kitakagaya in Osaka has just been nam Did you know Kitakagaya in Osaka has just been named one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods for 2026?

I have posted about it on here before and have also written extensively about it on my blog, but thought I would do another little appreciation post in light of this news.

I personally sought Kitakagaya out on my trip to Osaka last year simply because I am interested in street art, of which there is PLENTY.

But it turns out @timeouttravel has deemed it to be the 6th coolest neighbourhood in the world right now!

A former shipbuilding district in Osaka’s south-west, it is today home to an unexpected selection of murals, other forms of quirky street art (a London double-decker bus, anyone?!), hole-in-the-wall eateries, art studios, indie shops and of course the ubiquitous artistic manhole covers.

It has a gritty, industrial vibe and feels very local. I certainly didn’t see any other tourists while I was there, but that might well change now that it’s on the world’s radar.

If you’re into offbeat, art-focused travel, definitely add Kitakagaya to your Osaka travel plans! You can read more about it in my Alternative Osaka blog post.

Chinatown in Singapore is definitely a vibe! From Chinatown in Singapore is definitely a vibe!

From the striking Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, to the colourful Peranakan houses, to the vibrant murals depicting traditional life, to the many eateries and tea houses, and even a Hindu temple (such is the cultural fusion in Singapore), this district is definitely worth spending some time in. On weekends there’s even a pop-up craft market.

My favourite part was all the street art I encountered down unexpected laneways, but, as you can see, there’s really something for everyone.

You can read more about this and what else to see in Singapore on my blog.

But definitely add Chinatown to your Singapore travel itinerary!

As many of you know, I’m a big fan of literary tou As many of you know, I’m a big fan of literary tourism, so I love exploring cute bookshops, libraries and book cafés whenever I’m travelling.

In Istanbul recently, this led me to Minoa Pera, a gorgeous book café in the heart of the city’s Beyoğlu district.

Split over two levels, it feels like a treasure trove as soon as you step through the doorway, with muted lighting, winding staircases of colourful book spines, abundant hanging plants and cosy dining nooks. It’s actually been named one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores.

The ground level was stocked with English-language and international books, while the upper level was more about Turkish-language literature.

And my favourite bit was that one of Istanbul’s many resident cats had found its way in and was napping soundly on one of the shelves! It’s definitely not something we would usually see in Australia.

I spent way longer in there than I was expecting. Plus there was the ornate exterior to admire.

If you’re a bibliophile (or just like cute, aesthetic spaces) and find yourself in Istanbul, do yourself a favour and make a stop at Minoa Pera.

I’ll be writing more about this and other things to see in Istanbul in my upcoming blog post, so stay tuned.

📌 In the meantime, save this idea for your Istanbul travel planning!

🇮🇹 If you’re planning on visiting the foodie capit 🇮🇹 If you’re planning on visiting the foodie capital of Italy that is Bologna, you definitely won’t want to miss strolling around the Quadrilatero, the city’s oldest market 🇮🇹

This district of laneways running off the main Piazza Maggiore is a feast for the senses! I absolutely loved taking in all the sights, sounds, smells and tastes.

It’s exactly what you imagine Italy to be; bustling trattorias with al fresco tables covered in red-and-white chequered cloths, grocers selling abundant fresh fruit & veg, and gourmet shops with window displays full of pasta, cheese and ham.

I also discovered a cute, multi-level book café in the form of the Libreria Coop Ambasciatori.

I highly recommend spending a few hours browsing the various stores and stopping for a snack (or full meal) at one of the many quaint eateries. It’s a quintessential Bologna experience!

Have any of you visited Bologna before and explored the Quadrilatero?

Stay tuned for more Bologna and Italy content coming soon, both here and on my blog!
